limits.

Low back pain doesn't have to be your new normal. Acupuncture offers a natural, whole-body path to relief — one that works with your body's own healing intelligence to address the root cause, not just the sensation.

Our Approach to Back Pain Support

We work on breaking the cycle, not just managing it.

Many people have been told their back pain is something they simply have to live with. We believe differently — and so does a growing body of research on acupuncture for musculoskeletal pain.

In Chinese medicine, pain is understood as a signal — a sign that circulation, Qi, or structural balance has been disrupted somewhere in the system. When we locate and address that disruption, the body often finds its way back to ease and function on its own.

Our role is not to replace your medical care team — it is to bring a complementary layer of natural support that helps your body do what it already knows how to do: heal. We work alongside your physician, chiropractor, or physical therapist so that every aspect of your care is coordinated and moving in the same direction.

Back Pain We Support

Low back pain takes many forms. We meet all of them.

  • Low Back Pain

  • Neck & Upper Back

  • Compression Pain

  • Nerve Pain

  • Dull Aching Pain

  • Sharp Acute Pain

  • Stenosis Support

  • Post-Surgical Recovery

Bulging or herniated discs that create pressure, nerve irritation, or limited mobility. Acupuncture may help reduce surrounding inflammation and support the body's repair process.*

Structural

Disc Issues

Acute or chronic tightening of the lower back muscles — often with a pattern of flare-ups triggered by movement, stress, or prolonged sitting. We work on breaking the spasm cycle and re-educating the nervous system.*

Muscle

Muscle Spasm & Tension Practice

Postural

SI Joint & Hip Pain

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction and hip tightness that creates imbalance in the whole lower back complex. Acupuncture and bodywork together address both the local pain and the compensatory patterns around it.*

Shooting pain, numbness, or tingling that travels from the lower back down through the leg. One of the most common conditions we see — and one that often responds well to consistent acupuncture care.*

Nerve

Sciatica

Pain that has lasted months or years, often with a complex mix of structural, nervous system, and stress-related contributors. This is where our whole-body, root-cause approach tends to offer the most value.*

Chronic

Persistent Low Back Pain

Acute

Recent Injury or Pain

A sudden pull, lift, or twist that has left you locked up and guarding. Early acupuncture intervention may help reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system, and speed the return to movement.**

Why Acupuncture Works for Back Pain

Your body already knows how to heal. We help it remember.

Acupuncture doesn't introduce anything foreign into the body. It uses fine needles to stimulate the body's own systems — signaling them to increase circulation, reduce inflammation, and shift out of a pain cycle.

Interrupts the pain cycle

Pain creates protective muscle tension, which creates more pain. Acupuncture works on the nervous system to break that feedback loop — giving the muscles permission to release and the tissue space to breathe.

Promotes circulation to injured tissue

Healing requires blood flow. Acupuncture promotes local and systemic circulation — bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to areas that have been tight, restricted, or poorly perfused for months or years.

Calms the stress response

Chronic pain lives in the nervous system as much as in the tissue. Stress amplifies pain signals. Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system — reducing cortisol, calming the threat response, and creating the conditions for genuine healing.

Addresses root cause, not just location

Why do your muscles keep spasming? Why is the disc bulging? We trace the pattern back to its source — whether that is structural, postural, digestive, or stress-related — so that improvements hold and don't keep returning.

The Commitment to Change

Why we think in seasons, not sessions.

A single acupuncture session can provide real, immediate relief. But lasting change — a back that holds between treatments, that stops flaring, that genuinely feels different — requires something more: consistency, accumulation, and time.

Think of it like physical therapy. One session of PT feels good. But the real transformation happens over weeks and months of committed, progressive work. Acupuncture is the same. The body learns a new pattern gradually — the nervous system recalibrates, the muscles release old holding patterns, and the tissue has time to repair and reorganize.

This is why we design our back pain support program around a full season of care: 12 sessions over approximately three months. Twice a week or weekly at first, then spacing out as the body holds the improvements on its own — which is itself a sign of genuine progress.

The Process — Step by Step

How we walk this journey together.

We have designed every step of your experience to feel clear, unhurried, and genuinely supportive — because we want to be certain this is the right fit for you before we begin, and we want you to feel held every step of the way.

1 Your First Step — Intake Appointment

Detailed Assessment & Treatment Plan

the First step is your Intake Appointment. This is a thorough, unhurried session in which we do a complete assessment of your pain pattern, your health history, your lifestyle, and the goals you have shared with us.

At the end of this visit, you will receive your first acupuncture treatment. You will also leave with a clear, personalized treatment plan — including simple dietary and lifestyle adjustments, and herbal supplement recommendations where appropriate — all designed to address the root of your back pain, not just the surface.

We make sure your plan is easy to follow. There will be no guesswork.

2 Biweekly or Weekly Sessions

Treatment & Building a New Pattern

Depending on your condition and the treatment plan that we establish during your intake, You will return for Bikweekly or weekly visits so we can provide close, consistent support as your body begins to establish a new, healthier pattern. Each session includes acupuncture to help your musculoskeletal and nervous system recalibrate toward its natural state of ease and function.

At every visit, we check in on how you are doing — and we are always looking to see that your care is delivering:

  • Meaningful pain relief and reduced intensity of flare-ups

  • Improved mobility and range of motion

  • Possible reduction in reliance on pain medication*

  • More "good days" — better energy, mood, and stamina

  • Improved sensation, strength, and confidence in your body

* We never recommend adjusting medications without consulting your prescribing physician.

3 Transitional Care

Spacing Out as Improvements Hold

One of the most encouraging signs of genuine progress is when the body begins to hold its improvements between sessions. When we start to see this — usually somewhere between 8 and 12 visits, with some individual variability — we begin spacing visits further apart.

We move from Biweekly or weekly visits to every 10–14 days, then once a month, and eventually to an as-needed basis for tune-ups. Think of it the way you might think about physical therapy: intensive at first, then gradually stepping down as the body takes over.

We stay here for you. Whether that means addressing a new health concern, supporting a flare-up during a demanding season of life, or simply continuing with regular maintenance — we are always happy to meet you where you are.

4 Community & Referrals

Sharing the Gift of Feeling Well

We are genuinely honored that the majority of our new patients come to us through referrals — from current patients and members of the Bay Area community who have witnessed the effects of this work in their own bodies and in people they love. It is the most meaningful measure of our work, and we do not take it lightly.

We love helping people feel better in their bodies and their lives. It is what we show up excited to do every single day. If you have a family member, friend, or colleague who is struggling with back pain, with energy, with stress, or with any health challenge we may be able to support — we would be deeply glad to welcome them.

Over 80% of our new patients come to us through referral. We pride ourselves on work that speaks for itself — not through marketing, but through the real, lived experience of people who have felt the difference in their own bodies. We look forward to helping your loved ones on their own journey toward a more joyful, energetic, and pain-free life.
